Georgia Weather: Strong Thunderstorms In The Forecast

ATLANTA, GA — It looks like we’re in for a stormy weekend in metro Atlanta, with the first of the storms forecast to roll in overnight Friday and continue into the morning on St. Patrick’s Day.

The National Weather Service has issued a hazardous weather outlook, predicting isolated to scattered thunderstorms in north and central Georgia from the early-morning hours Saturday through late Monday. Several different storms systems are moving through the area, according to the weather service.

The highest chances for strong thunderstorms are on Saturday and Monday, the NWS says.

According to the weekend forecast, the chance for thunderstorms will begin at about 2 a.m. Saturday and kick up again after 5 a.m. Showers and possible thunderstorms are in the forecast again for Saturday. It should be sunny during the day on Sunday, but Sunday night, showers and thunderstorms are again in the forecast.

There is a 60 percent chance of rain every day through the weekend, according to the weather service.

If there’s any good weather news for this weekend, it’s the temperatures. The thermometer has been going up and down like crazy in metro Atlanta lately and, this weekend, it’s supposed to be up again.

Friday’s high will be around 71, with a high of 72 forecast on Saturday and 71 again on Sunday. Nighttime lows should only be getting down to the low 50s, the weather service says.

So, if you’re going to be celebrating the luck of the Irish this weekend, make sure to bring along a green umbrella.

Friday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 71. West wind around 5 m.p.h. Friday night, a slight chance of showers before 2 a.m., then a chance of showers and thunderstorms between 2 a.m. and 5 a.m., then showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm after 5 a.m. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 54. Southwest wind around 5 m.p.h. The chance of precipitation is 60 percent.

Saturday: Showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm before 9 a.m., then a chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 72. West wind 10-15 m.p.h, with gusts as high as 20 m.p.h. Chance of precipitation is 60 percent. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. Saturday night, partly cloudy, with a low around 53. Southwest wind around 10 m.p.h., with gusts as high as 15 m.p.h.

Sunday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 71. Northwest wind around 10 m.p.h. Showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm Sunday night. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 52. Chance of precipitation is again 60 percent.
